Richardson Ford Heritage Spans Four Generations - written by Driffield Wold Weekly Newspaper

141st Driffield Show Special Supplement - Driffield Wold Weekly

Richardson Ford Heritage Spans Four Generations.

Aged just 10 years old, Paul Richardson can remember his first ever Driffield Show back in 1947.

At that time, the show was held on Bridlington Road, where Driffield School is situated now, and Mr Richardson recalls it was a much smaller affair than the show of today.

He said: “It was just after the war when I attended my first Driffield Show and other than being away at school at Pocklington and two years on National Service with the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean, I haven’t missed a show since.

“The show has changed so much over the years. It has got so much bigger and far better organised. David Tite has done a very good job running the show and it has got bigger and better every year.”

Mr Richardson’s family business Richardson Ford has had a presence at the Driffield Show for well over 80 years – and possibly longer!

Having recently celebrated the business’ 96th anniversary, owners Paul and Toby Richardson are very proud of their heritage, which spans four generations.

The family business was established in 1919 by Percy Richardson, whose parents were corn merchants from Norton. It began life mainly concentrating on repairs to agricultural machinery and cars.

The business first became agents for Oliver tractors, which were an American-owned farm equipment manufacturer, before gaining a Standard car agency in the early 1920s. In 1927, the company became Driffield's main Ford dealer, selling cars, tractors and agricultural machinery.

Alec Richardson, Paul's father, continued to grow the business, and the company became a major provider of cars, commercial vehicles, tractors, and agricultural machinery throughout Yorkshire.

In 1959, a new agricultural depot was opened at Sproatley in Holderness, managed by Paul, giving the business full coverage in East Yorkshire.

In 1968, Richardsons purchased the long established Ford Main Dealership of Ripleys covering the Bridlington area.

The company continued to grow, and both agricultural equipment and road vehicles were becoming more and more diversified and complex. It was decided in the early 80s to specialise in cars and commercial vehicles, as well as growing the extensive parts wholesale operation serving Hull and the surrounding areas.

The Ford Richardson Garage stood at 47 Middle Street North in Driffield for many years until a fire in 1993 destroyed the building and the new showroom was built on Westgate.

Additionally, at Bridlington, the Grandways supermarket, and adjacent garage on Hilderthorpe Road were purchased, enabling a major extension to be made to the accident repair operation. This recently achieved full Ford Accident Repair status, and is the approved repairer for most major insurers.

Paul Richardson was very proud when he was asked to be President of the Driffield Show in 2007.

He said: “Driffield Show is one of the biggest one-day shows in the country and is a showcase for Driffield and its businesses.

“In the past it was practice that orders for new equipment or machinery was placed on show day, but that tends to be less common now and it is seen as a great social day out and a great way to catch up with friends and customers over a cup of tea.

“It was an honour to be president of the show and I remember very well that year it had been horrendous rain and David Tite had to organise rubber tracks to get the heavy machinery onto the showground.

“But luckily the day of the show was ok and we had a good event. The Driffield Show is a wonderful day out for everyone. There is a lot of entertainment in the rings appealing to all ages and it has maintained it’s strong agricultural roots, which is important to its continued success.”

This year Richardson Ford will have their stand D62 at the Driffield Show and will be displaying the latest Ford range including the all new Edge SUV, Focus RS and the full Ford range. We will also be bringing some golden oldies to the show including a Sapphire Cosworth which was originally our demonstrator way back in 1991 and now with only 48,000 miles a real classic and a 1989 XR2.  We would like to welcome customers old and new to see the current Ford range and meet the team.
